India Presses UK on Nirav Modi's Extradition Pledge

The Indian government remains resolute in its efforts to extradite Nirav Modi from the UK, with communications ongoing between New Delhi and London officials. Recent UK High Court rulings have dismissed Modi's safety concerns, clearing obstacles for his return to India to face fraud charges.

The Indian government continues its determined efforts to secure the extradition of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi from the United Kingdom, with consistent interactions with British authorities. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the issue at a media briefing, as Modi’s extradition proceedings advance through the UK judicial system.

Jaiswal emphasized the government's commitment: "We remain fully dedicated to ensuring that fugitives like Nirav Modi are brought back to India to face justice." This comes amidst ongoing legal processes in the UK about India's appeal, following last month's significant developments in Modi's case.

The London High Court recently refused to revisit Modi's extradition order related to the substantial Rs 13,800 crore PNB fraud case. The court dismissed his claims of facing torture in India, highlighting comprehensive assurances from the Indian government ensuring his safe extradition for judicial proceedings.

Nirav Modi’s recent legal challenges stem from a UK High Court judgment in a separate case which he argued indicated risks of ill-treatment. However, the court found the assurances provided by India about Modi's treatment credible and sufficient.

These commitments include not interrogating Modi by CBI or ED and ensuring his stay in Mumbai's Arthur Road Prison with video trial facilities. With these rulings, Modi’s options to contest his extradition appear exhausted, marking a significant step toward his return for trial.

This development is parallel to another case involving Mehul Choksi, Modi’s uncle, where the Court of Cassation of Belgium rejected his appeal against extradition, citing lack of substantive grounds.
