The ongoing conflict involving Iran has begun to significantly affect India's healthcare system. Pharmaceutical distributors warn of steep price increases for essential drugs due to rising raw material costs, predominantly sourced from West Asian centers such as Dubai, according to the Visakhapatnam Chemists Association.
Pharmaceutical companies have already started notifying wholesale dealers about upcoming price hikes, triggered by disruptions in the supply of crucial inputs like petrochemical-based solvents and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). These shortages, fueled by geopolitical tensions, have jolted production economics.
Despite pressure on pricing, local pharmaceutical wholesalers are working to keep stock levels up, preventing shortages. Concurrently, the Indian government is stepping in to stabilize input costs and is considering temporary price relaxations to ensure basic drugs remain available without hampering production viability.
