The government of Himachal Pradesh has announced a substantial increase in incentives for unopposed elections to Panchayati Raj Institution positions. The rewards range from Rs 10 lakh to a whopping Rs 1 crore, aimed at encouraging consensus-based decision-making and reducing electoral competition.

The incentive for electing unopposed Gram Sabha leaders, such as pradhan and up-pradhan, has been increased to Rs 25 lakh. Meanwhile, Panchayat Samiti members will now garner Rs 50 lakh, and Zila Parishad members, including their chairpersons, could receive up to Rs 1 crore if elected without opposition.

Officials highlight that these financial rewards are designed to foster agreement among communities and eliminate the influence of financial expenditure in election outcomes. The Himachal Pradesh Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department is actively promoting this initiative through its district administrations, targeting the next election cycle in May 2026.
