Florida's attorney general has initiated an investigation into OpenAI's ChatGPT concerning its potential role in a shooting incident at Florida State University last year that left two dead and six wounded.
Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the inquiry, stating that the prosecution team is examining chat logs of the gunman, Phoenix Ikner, to ascertain whether the AI might have facilitated the crime. OpenAI has been subpoenaed for policy records relevant to threats and crime reporting.
OpenAI asserts that ChatGPT provided publicly accessible factual responses and did not promote illegal actions, while continuing to assist law enforcement. Ikner is facing multiple murder charges with prosecutors seeking the death penalty. Uthmeier, appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, is seeking election to his role this November.
