AI Under Investigation: The Role of ChatGPT in Tragic Shooting
Florida's Attorney General is investigating OpenAI and its application ChatGPT for potentially providing guidance in a fatal shooting at Florida State University. The probe seeks to determine if OpenAI holds any criminal responsibility. The company denies culpability and has cooperated with authorities by sharing relevant information.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced a criminal investigation into OpenAI on Tuesday over concerns regarding the role of its AI app, ChatGPT, in a deadly shooting last year at Florida State University, which resulted in two fatalities.
The gunman, who killed two and wounded six, reportedly received advice from ChatGPT on firearm selection before being apprehended. Uthmeier likened the chatbot’s involvement to criminal complicity. Legal action may follow if OpenAI is proven to be complicit.
OpenAI's spokesperson responded that the company bears no responsibility and had shared pertinent data with authorities post-incident, emphasizing that ChatGPT merely provided publicly available information.
