Sikkim is facing a severe shortage of LPG cylinders, affecting both residents and businesses during one of the peak tourist seasons. Reports indicate that citizens are queuing as early as 3 AM in hopes of securing much-needed supplies, yet many return empty-handed.
The crisis is particularly dire for the hospitality industry. Rajesh Gupta, a hotel owner in Gangtok, cites that his establishment requires two commercial cylinders daily to meet customer demands but is currently receiving only one a week. The shortage has forced many hotels and restaurants to alter or limit their food offerings, with some businesses shuttering entirely.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has held a high-level meeting to tackle the issue, directing heightened monitoring to combat hoarding and overpricing. The government stresses the need for vigilance to ensure the uninterrupted availability of essential goods throughout the state.
