German sculptor Jacques Tilly, known for his provocative carnival floats, has been sentenced in absentia to eight years and six months in prison by a Moscow court. The sentencing is related to a controversial sculpture depicting Russian President Vladimir Putin and Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill in a sexual act.
According to independent news outlet SOTAvision, Tilly was found guilty of spreading false information about the military and insulting religious believers. This case also referenced a 2024 interview with Deutsche Welle in which Tilly criticized the Russian military's actions in Ukraine.
Tilly, famous for challenging political power through his art, dismissed the charges as an attack on freedom of expression. The court imposed additional penalties that are unenforceable due to Tilly's non-residency in Russia. His work includes floats targeting various global leaders, including Donald Trump and Tayyip Erdogan.
