The Supreme Court of Azerbaijan dismissed an appeal from opposition leader Tofig Yagublu on Thursday, upholding a nine-year prison sentence. Yagublu, a 65-year-old member of the opposition Musavat party, has faced multiple incarcerations over three decades for dissent against the Azerbaijani government.

Arrested in December 2023, Yagublu was found guilty in March of the previous year for charges of fraud and document forgery. His supporters claim the allegations are politically motivated. Lawyer Nemat Karimli argues that the initial trial was compromised by significant procedural errors and plans to escalate the case to the European Court of Human Rights.

Azerbaijan, an oil-rich nation, has faced Western criticism over its human rights practices, amidst a series of arrests targeting independent journalists and political dissidents. Baku dismisses these critiques as Western interference in its judiciary.
