The Sikkim government is contemplating the temporary closure of 17 more primary schools this year due to a persistent drop in student enrolment. According to Education Department Secretary Tashi Chophel Lepcha, declining enrolment figures are a significant hurdle for the state's educational framework, largely influenced by Sikkim's low fertility rate.
During the State Level Education Conference at Chintan Bhawan, Lepcha noted that last year saw the temporary shuttering of 38 primary schools. The Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of 1.0 positions Sikkim as the state with the lowest fertility rate nationwide, directly impacting population growth and school enrolment.
Addressing teacher assignment challenges, the department is preparing a Transfer Policy Act intended to enhance stability and transparency in postings. Furthermore, initiatives are underway to boost inclusive education by addressing the shortage of educators for children with special needs. Upcoming educational expansions include a new Chief Minister's Model School at Dzongu and plans for similar institutions in other districts, as highlighted by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang's call for ongoing educational improvements.
