Delhi Metro Enforces Stricter Penalties to Curb Misconduct
The Delhi Metro has seen a surge in misdemeanors, with 8,251 penalties imposed between September and February for filming, fighting, and unlawful entry. The authorities are intensifying enforcement, with fines proposed to increase under new amendments aimed at deterring offences and decriminalising minor violations.

The Delhi Metro has identified filming reels, abusing, and fighting as the most common violations among commuters, with 2,468 penalties issued between September and February. Authorities reported that unlawful entry into women's coaches followed closely with 2,313 penalties during the same period.
A total of 8,251 penalties were recorded over these months. September saw the highest number of penalties, with 1,316 cases, reflecting stricter enforcement. Nuisance-related incidents were consistently high, including filming inside trains and using offensive language. There was a peak in January with 501 cases, a notable increase in comparison to other months.
The Centre is proposing stricter monetary penalties under the Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002 through the Jan Vishwas Bill, 2026. The amendments aim to increase the penalties up to Rs 2,500 for misdemeanors like nuisance, spitting, and drunkenness, enhancing deterrence while decriminalising minor violations.
