Monsoon Mission: Delhi's Drain Desilting Drive Advances

In an ambitious move towards monsoon preparedness, Delhi's Irrigation and Flood Control Department reports significant progress in its drain desilting efforts. Led by Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, more than 16.48 lakh cubic metres of silt have been removed from 76 large drains, equating to a 57.68% completion rate.

The Najafgarh drain system, notoriously flood-prone, has seen nearly 48% desilting, with other drains at 63% completion. A total of 28.57 lakh cubic metres is the target to ensure smooth water flow during heavy rains. Singh emphasized that the focus is on readiness, not reactive measures, to keep the public's daily life undisrupted by potential flooding.

In addition to desilting, the department is bolstering its mechanical resources, investing over Rs 94 crore in specialized equipment like draglines and excavators specifically for deep drain maintenance. This initiative underscores a proactive approach to flood management in Delhi, ensuring major drains are functional before the monsoon's arrival.
