The Uttarakhand government has appealed to the Union environment ministry for authorization to cut down more than 19,000 damaged Sal trees in the Dehradun Forest Division. These trees have been ravaged by larvae of the Sal borer (Hoplocerambyx spinicornis), a pest that threatens the forest's ecological balance.
Forest Minister Subodh Uniyal revealed that an expert team from the Forest Research Institute (FRI) identified the infested trees after assessing the Thano, Asarori, and Jhajra ranges. In response, the government plans to implement a 'Tree Trap Operation' during the monsoon to capture these destructive larvae.
Experts warn that the infestation, potentially exacerbated by climate change and last year's heavy rainfall, poses a significant threat to the forest. The operation, involving women's self-help groups, seeks to avert further damage and necessitates a comprehensive scientific inquiry into the outbreak's causes and solutions.
