Unwavering Deals: Trafigura and YPFB's Stronghold Amid Smuggling Scandal
Despite Bolivia's Energy Minister declaring a suspension of gasoline contracts due to a smuggling scandal, Trafigura’s agreements with YPFB remain unchanged. Both entities affirm the contracts are unaffected, with new quality standards set by YPFB at no extra cost to the state. Investigations continue regarding the adulterated fuel issue.
In a surprising turn of events, global commodity trader Trafigura firmly dismissed claims from Bolivia's Energy Minister regarding suspended contracts. Despite statements about halting gasoline agreements amid a smuggling scandal, Trafigura insists their deals with Bolivia's state oil company YPFB remain operational.
YPFB assured that primary fuel supply contracts are intact and introduced a contract addendum with Vitol to enforce stricter fuel quality parameters beyond current regulations without additional costs to the state. This move underscores YPFB’s commitment to superior quality standards amid fuel adulteration allegations.
The controversy erupted after the discovery of 5,000 tanker trucks allegedly smuggling substandard fuel from Chile, part of a network believed to have trafficked $150 million of compromised fuel. While investigations proceed, Trafigura maintains it has upheld all contractual duties, citing no disputes over product quality with YPFB.
