Delhi's Cloud-Seeding Ambitions: A Race Against Air Pollution
Delhi plans another cloud-seeding trial following previous attempts last October, aiming to clear air pollution. Despite initial failures due to low moisture, IIT Kanpur and the Delhi Environment Department are refining their strategy. The initiative is part of efforts to artificially induce rainfall and improve air quality.

Delhi may see a renewed effort in cloud-seeding operations this summer, an official confirmed. Two previous trials conducted last October ended without rain due to insufficient moisture in clouds, despite a Memorandum of Understanding between Delhi's Environment Department and IIT Kanpur.
The technique is aimed at enhancing rainfall through dispersal of chemicals like silver iodide. Last year, tests using eight chemical flares were inconclusive. However, the findings aim to refine future trials and determine optimal conditions for success.
Permission for another trial is now being sought from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. The trials form part of a strategy to mitigate air pollution by generating artificial rainfall. A report from the Economic Survey of Delhi 2025-26 stresses continued partnership with the IMD for subsequent trials.
