Spain's 7 Billion Euro Aid for Storm-Affected Regions

The Spanish government has announced a substantial financial support package worth around 7 billion euros to aid individuals impacted by severe storms in the Extremadura and Andalusia regions. This decision comes in the wake of significant damage to infrastructure and crops, causing the evacuation of thousands.

Budget Minister Maria Jesus Montero emphasized that the aid would help over 12,400 evacuees and alleviate the impact of floods on homes and businesses, particularly within the agricultural and fishing industries. She also mentioned that further assistance might be considered based on upcoming expert reports.

According to Agriculture Minister Luis Planas, the storms have devastated at least 14,000 hectares of crops, affecting products like berries, citrus fruits, and olives. The rainfall in Spain has exceeded average levels by 38% since October, as reported by AEMET. Meanwhile, Portugal's government has estimated 4 billion euros in reconstruction costs and is offering loans and incentives to address the aftermath of Storm Kristin.
