Spain has initiated an investigation into major social media platforms such as X, Meta, and TikTok, accusing them of disseminating AI-generated child sexual abuse material. This action is part of a broader European effort to scrutinize big tech companies for harmful content and illegal activities.
In a decisive move against technology giants, Spain has tasked prosecutors with investigating social media platforms X, Meta, and TikTok for allegedly spreading AI-generated child sexual exploitation material. The directive, announced by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, aligns with increased European regulatory scrutiny regarding harmful digital content.
The probe is the premier act of a series of regulations outlined by Sanchez, stemming from a technical report involving three ministries. Sanchez emphasized the necessity of protecting children's safety, privacy, and dignity from the unchecked power of technology companies, citing troubling evidence of AI misuse in producing and sharing fake nude images of minors.
As part of a wider global crackdown on digital platforms, inquiries and legal actions have been initiated in various countries. Significantly, Ireland's Data Protection Commission is examining X's xAI chatbot Grok, while the European Commission is scrutinizing Meta, TikTok, and Grok under the EU's Digital Services Act.
