Spain Targets Tech Titans Over AI-Generated Abuse Content
The Spanish government has launched an investigation into tech giants X, Meta, and TikTok for allegedly spreading AI-generated child sexual abuse material. This move is part of a wider European effort to regulate big tech companies amid concerns over online safety and the companies' social responsibilities.
The Spanish government has taken decisive action against major social media platforms — X, Meta, and TikTok — by ordering prosecutors to probe their alleged involvement in spreading AI-generated child sexual abuse material, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Tuesday.
This development aligns with the growing scrutiny in Europe on large technology corporations accused of facilitating anti-competitive behavior and deploying addictive features. Despite inquiries, the companies implicated by Sanchez have yet to comment on the allegations.
Highlighting the global spotlight on technology platforms, Sanchez remarked on X, ‘These platforms are compromising our children's mental health and dignity. This cannot continue unchallenged.’ While Spain ramps up its investigative efforts, other nations have initiated similar actions to curtail the spread of illicit AI-generated content.
