On Saturday, BJP women leaders and workers staged a vehement protest near the residence of Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, located in Sunehri Bagh. The demonstration followed the defeat of a constitutional amendment aiming to increase women's representation in the Lok Sabha.
Prominent figures like BJP women MPs Hema Malini and Kamaljeet Sehrawat joined others in condemning the opposition, holding them responsible for 'humiliating' the women of India by voting against the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill. The bill's rejection prompted claims of the opposition lacking faith in empowering women.
The protesting group was eventually dispersed by police using water cannons. BJP leaders lamented the setback, with Hema Malini expressing disappointment over thwarted efforts to secure women's legislative representation. The Bill, intended to reserve seats for women in legislatures starting 2029, fell short, securing only 298 out of the necessary 352 votes.
