In a determined effort to tackle drug-related offenses, the Shimla district police have detained 34 individuals this year under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988 (PIT-NDPS Act). This ongoing initiative aims to crack down on repeat offenders.

Recently, Khemraj alias Sunny Walia, a 40-year-old resident from Basantpur in the Sunni tehsil, was detained under the preventive provisions of the Act. The detention, sanctioned under Section 3(1) of the PIT-NDPS Act by the Himachal Pradesh government, was executed by the Sunni police, with support from the District Crime Record Bureau on April 21, 2026.

Superintendent of Police, Gaurav Singh, stated that the strict implementation of the Act is essential to deter habitual offenders and maintain public safety. Walia, with a history of narcotics trafficking, faces four cases under the NDPS Act and additional charges dating back to 2015. Authorities emphasize ongoing efforts to curb narcotics crimes.
