Sri Lanka's Finance Ministry has confirmed a cyberattack on the External Resources Department's computer systems, attributing the breach to cyber hackers who executed a foreign currency heist.
A ministry statement followed opposition claims that USD 2.5 million intended for a foreign debt payment was mistakenly transferred to an erroneous account, suspected to belong to the hackers.
With the payment meant as a partial settlement of a USD 22.9 million debt due in September 2025, the government's official response is pending, amid opposition-led calls for parliamentary investigations by the Committee on Public Accounts.
