A group of Buddhist monks began a week-long Walk for Peace across Sri Lanka on Tuesday, supported by the country's government. The initiative, as announced by the information department, aims to promote mindfulness and unity.
The walk, led by Vietnamese Monk Pannakara Thero, started with a religious ceremony in Anuradhapura and will cover a 160 km trek to Colombo. The President of Sri Lanka, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, is expected to participate in the closing ceremony.
The monks, accompanied by Aloka the peace dog, hail from Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. The initiative aligns with the teachings of Buddha, focused on compassion and harmony, in a country where Buddhism is the majority religion.
