A Sri Lankan court on Wednesday mandated the further detention of Suresh Sallay, the former head of the state intelligence service, amid the ongoing investigation into the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings.
These attacks, executed by nine suicide bombers affiliated with a local Islamist extremist group linked to ISIS, resulted in the deaths of nearly 270 individuals, including 11 Indians, and injured over 500 others. Sallay, who was apprehended in February, was declared the third suspect in these bombings.
Amidst calls for a comprehensive inquiry, the current government has reignited the investigations, suspecting potential political shielding of those involved. Sallay, detained under the Counter Terrorism Act, has been denied family visits.
