Turkey's Diplomatic Drive: Bridging Conflict in Europe and Beyond
Turkey is pushing to renew peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, with President Erdogan engaging NATO and European leaders to foster negotiations. Erdogan emphasizes the need for transatlantic cooperation and expresses concern over the broader impacts of external conflicts, notably the U.S.-Iran war.
In a bid to mediate peace, Turkey is making efforts to revive negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan conveyed this during his meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Ankara. Kyiv has already requested Turkey to host a high-level meeting with Russia, tapping into Ankara's unique position of maintaining strong relations with both nations since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
President Erdogan communicated his commitment to fostering peace between Ukraine and Russia, working towards initiating talks at the leadership level. He also stressed the importance of maintaining transatlantic ties, urging European NATO allies to take greater responsibility for regional security.
Erdogan, in a subsequent call with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, noted the weakening effect of the U.S.-Iran war on Europe, advocating for peace-oriented interventions to mitigate the conflict's impact. Erdogan highlighted Turkey's broader diplomatic engagements, mentioning its recent hosting of a diplomacy forum with involved parties including U.S., Iran, and Pakistan.
