In a groundbreaking archaeological discovery, the Telangana government's Heritage Department has identified a vast cluster of megalithic burial sites in the Mulugu district. Believed to be among India's largest dolmen burial concentrations, these sites were uncovered in Motlagudem village, following a thorough field investigation spurred by residents' tips.

These dolmen structures, locally termed 'Rakasi Bandalu' (giant stones), provide a window into the lives of early inhabitants in the Godavari river basin. They reflect ancient customs, social organization, and life-after-death beliefs, echoing practices found across South India, including regions of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala.

The burial sites, spread over 100 acres in the Kappalayi Gutta area, feature impressive stone craftsmanship. Each consists of massive sandstone slabs forming sarcophagus-like structures, underscoring the inhabitants' remarkable architectural skills. This discovery not only enriches Telangana's historical narrative but also poses pressing preservation challenges as some sites face deterioration due to local construction activities.
