On Saturday, Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Virendra Kumar, inaugurated the 29th Divya Kala Mela, a significant platform fostering dignity and economic empowerment for persons with disabilities. The initiative underscores the government's dedication to inclusive growth and equal opportunities through various supportive measures since 2014.
The event signifies more than an exhibition; it embodies a shift towards empowerment with the term "Divyang" recognizing persons with disabilities. Notable initiatives include the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, extended disability categories, and the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan to enhance accessibility and inclusion.
Member of Parliament Satnam Singh Sandhu commended the initiative for linking Divyang artisans directly to markets, promoting dignity through self-reliance and entrepreneurship. Rajiv Sharma, Joint Secretary at DEPwD, highlighted its economic inclusion aspect, boasting participation from over 2,362 Divyang entrepreneurs, generating Rs 23 crore, and providing over Rs 20 crore in sanctioned loans for empowerment and job creation through the event.
