UK Biobank Data Breach Sparks International Security Crackdown

Britain's government has launched an investigation into the unauthorized advertising of data from UK Biobank on China's Alibaba platform, allegedly involving information from 500,000 participants. Science Minister Ian Murray informed lawmakers about the breach, which led to the data being advertised for sale across three listings by different sellers on the e-commerce site.

Murray assured that no purchases were made before the advertisements were removed, as the government worked with UK Biobank, Chinese authorities, and the vendor to tackle the issue. The breach saw UK Biobank temporarily suspend its platform access, pending a comprehensive investigation.

Labeling the incident as a serious violation, UK Biobank assured that no personal identifiers were disclosed. Additional security measures are being implemented to monitor suspicious downloads and file exports as the charity referred itself to the Information Commissioner's Office for further scrutiny.
