Data Breach Scandal: UK Biobank's Information for Sale on Alibaba

In an alarming security breach, data from the UK Biobank, a health research charity, was advertised for sale on China's Alibaba platform. This data reportedly involved 500,000 individuals, sparking swift government intervention.

UK Biobank, which offers anonymized data to accredited researchers, ensures user information such as names and contact details were not included. Science Minister Ian Murray confirmed that no purchases were made before the listings were removed, and the charity has revoked the data access of three research institutions.

The government, along with UK Biobank and the Chinese authorities, is taking decisive steps to address the incident. Access to Biobank data has been paused, pending technical safeguards against future breaches. The breach has been reported to the Information Commissioner's Office for further investigation.
