Sweden Elevates Defence with Major Investments in Air Defence Systems

Sweden is investing 8.7 billion Swedish crowns ($916 million) in air defence and anti-drone systems, according to Defence Minister Pal Jonson. This procurement from companies such as Saab and BAE Systems is part of Sweden's response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, aiming to enhance protection of infrastructure and population centers.

The nation's military spending is projected to reach 2.8% of GDP by 2026 and 3.5% by 2030. The Gute II anti-drone system, proven effective in Ukraine, is a key element of the package, capable of being mounted on both ground and vehicles.

Saab's contribution to the package is a 2.6 billion crown anti-drone platform, designed to neutralize low-flying drones. The comprehensive package also includes ammunition and infantry mobility vehicles from Finnish defence firm Sisu, with delivery scheduled for 2027 and 2028.
