Sweden Fortifies Air Defenses with Major Military Investment
Sweden plans to enhance its defense capabilities by purchasing air defense and anti-drone systems worth 8.7 billion Swedish crowns. This move comes in response to increased threats following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The investment includes systems from Saab and will focus on protecting critical infrastructure.
Sweden has announced a significant investment in its defense systems, purchasing advanced air defense and anti-drone technology worth 8.7 billion Swedish crowns from companies including Saab and BAE Systems, according to the nation's defense minister.
This decision aligns with a broader European trend of heightened military spending in response to the Russian incursion into Ukraine. Sweden's defense budget is expected to reach 2.8% of its GDP by 2026 and increase to 3.5% by 2030, emphasizing air defense as a government priority.
The deal will incorporate the Gute II anti-drone system, capable of protecting both military units and infrastructure like nuclear facilities. Additionally, the package includes ammunition and mobility vehicles. Delivery is slated for 2027 and 2028, reflecting Sweden's commitment to enhancing national security.
