Sweden Boosts Defense with Major Arms Purchase
Sweden announced a significant defense upgrade, spending 8.7 billion Swedish crowns on air defense and anti-drone systems from companies like Saab and BAE Systems. The move aims to enhance protection against aerial threats, with deliveries expected in 2027 and 2028, as military spending increases due to regional tensions.
Sweden has committed to a landmark investment in its defense capabilities, acquiring air defense and anti-drone systems valued at 8.7 billion Swedish crowns. The procurement will see contributions from industry leaders including Saab and BAE Systems.
Defense Minister Pal Jonson highlighted the urgency of enhancing air protection, emphasizing government priorities in response to aerial threats. Included in the purchase is the Gute II anti-drone system, a versatile radar and cannon technology designed to safeguard critical infrastructure and military units.
This move aligns with broader European defense initiatives in the wake of security challenges posed by Russia's actions in Ukraine. Sweden's military spending is projected to rise significantly, with deliveries of new equipment expected by 2027 and 2028.
