India is preparing to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This event promises an expanded programme compared to the 2026 Glasgow edition, which featured 10 sports disciplines and six para events. Notable sports, such as shooting, wrestling, badminton, and archery, are anticipated to return, contributing significantly to India's medal tally.
Elite Indian recurve archers, Deepika Kumari and Tarundeep Rai, have shown enthusiasm for archery's reinstatement in the Games. Reflecting on the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, where India last hosted and won substantial medals, Deepika credited her success as a 16-year-old gold medalist for archery's growing popularity in the country.
Tarundeep Rai, a CWG 2010 bronze medallist, talked about the transformative effect of such major events on India's sports infrastructure and grassroots participation. Highlighting the exponential growth of archery, both Rai and Jayanta Talukdar, a fellow Olympian, underscored the importance of hosting international events for sustaining momentum and nurturing emerging talent in India.
