In a bid to tackle the rising threat of cyber fraud, Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar held a crucial meeting with banking sector representatives on Thursday. This meeting followed 'Operation Octopus', an operation aimed at dismantling cyber fraud networks, which led to the arrest of numerous bank officials linked to fraudulent activities.
Commissioner Sajjanar elaborated on the sophisticated methods employed by cybercriminals, headquartered in countries like Cambodia and Vietnam, who operate through intermediaries within India. They abuse bank systems by working in cahoots with bank officials to open mule accounts, effectively channeling illicit funds.
Sajjanar stressed the need for banks to prioritize citizen safety and integrity over mere account-opening targets. He proposed embedding security measures into branch KPIs and urged the adoption of advanced technologies to detect mule activity. By implementing strategic changes, banks can play a key role in eradicating cyber fraud and safeguarding customers.
