Tragedy Spurs Changes at Thrissur Pooram Festival

In the aftermath of a devastating fireworks explosion that resulted in the loss of 14 lives at Mundathicode, the annual Thrissur Pooram festival in Kerala will be observed with scaled-down celebrations, officials announced on Thursday. The decision emerged from a state-convened meeting involving ministers, local MPs, and Devaswom representatives.

While the traditional rituals synonymous with Thrissur Pooram will go on as planned, the vibrant display of fireworks will be replaced by a symbolic round of crackers. Moreover, the Kudamattam umbrella exchange ceremony will feature reduced participation. Nonetheless, the Ilanjithara Melam percussion ensemble will proceed unchanged, preserving some essence of the festival spirit.

Authorities are prioritizing safety, as evidenced by the installation of 350 CCTV cameras and the deployment of experienced police personnel, ensuring a secure environment. In light of high temperatures, attendees are advised to bring essential items such as water and hats. Elephant management rules are strictly enforced, highlighting a cautious approach to festival proceedings.
