The India Meteorological Department has declared an orange alert for potential heatwave conditions across several districts in Kerala, urging residents to exercise extreme caution. Palakkad is forecasted to hit 41 degrees Celsius, with Kollam and Thrissur close behind at 40 degrees.
Authorities have set strict guidelines, particularly for the education sector, suspending vacation classes and student activities. Exam valuations can proceed if sufficient safeguards, such as ventilation and access to water, are provided. Officials are also coordinating with district disaster management teams to relay safety measures via digital channels.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan emphasized public health precautions, likening the advised midday indoor period from 11 am to 3 pm to a 'self-lockdown.' Public awareness campaigns are encouraging residents to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and provide water for animals. The Kollam administration has also closed educational institutions for safety.
