Amazon has signed a landmark agreement to purchase carbon credits from The Good Rice Alliance (TGRA), focusing on reducing methane emissions through sustainable rice farming in India.
This initiative will see Amazon become the primary buyer of over 685,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent carbon credits during the initial phase, a vital step towards cutting emissions in India's vast rice cultivation sector, the world’s third-largest methane emitter.
TGRA's partnership involves training over 13,000 farmers in improved water-management techniques, potentially reducing irrigation water use by 30%. The carbon credits are rigorously verified using the Verra methodology, promising a real climate impact, according to Amazon's Sustainability Director Michelle Jolly.
