In a bid to balance economic growth with environmental conservation, the Odisha government launched a new Marine Spatial Plan on Thursday. The plan intends to strategically guide marine resource utilization along the coastline while safeguarding ecological interests.

This initiative, in collaboration with the National Centre for Coastal Research under India's Ministry of Earth Sciences, aims to systematically approach sectoral activities like fisheries, shipping, tourism, and aquaculture. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi highlighted that the plan will support the blue economy and ensure marine biodiversity conservation.

Odisha is making strides as one of the first states to implement such a comprehensive marine planning initiative. The plan is part of a broader Sustainable Ocean Planning effort underway since 2019, in partnership with Norway, aimed at ensuring sustainable development and environmental protection along India's coastlines.
