Kashmir's higher terrains, such as Gurez in the north and the Sonamarg-Zojila axis in the center, were blanketed with snowfall on Tuesday, while the plains experienced heavy rainfall. The precipitation marks the end of a prolonged dry period impacting Jammu and Kashmir, officials reported.

The beginning of 2026 concluded with a stark 65 percent precipitation departure from the regular winter season. The winter of 2025-26 has seen only 100.6 mm of precipitation, as opposed to the typical 284.9 mm, leaving water reservoirs critically low.

Officials have also projected ongoing cloudy conditions with moderate rain or snow in upper reaches till Wednesday, with regions like Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, and Anantnag likely to experience moderate snowfall.
