The Kerala High Court has initiated a review of the controversial 2017 actress sexual assault case involving actor Dileep. On Tuesday, the court requested responses from Dileep and nine others after the state government filed an appeal challenging the trial court's verdict. The trial court had previously acquitted Dileep and three other individuals, while sentencing six others to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. The government questions the legality and merit of the acquittals.
The case, which captured the attention of Kerala society, involves serious allegations of conspiracy and assault. The prosecution alleges that actor Dileep conspired with the main accused, Sunil N S, to carry out the assault and record it. Although initially implicated, Dileep and the others were found not guilty after a protracted trial process. The government is now seeking to overturn their acquittals and enhance the sentences of those convicted.
The High Court issued notices to both the convicted individuals and those previously acquitted, as the government argues that the trial court failed to deliver an adequate sentence given the severity of the crime. The case remains a significant issue in Kerala, embodying broader concerns of justice and societal safety.
