Tamil Nadu voters demonstrated impressive resilience during the recent assembly elections, undeterred by soaring temperatures that reached 2–4°C above normal. Braving high humidity, especially in cities like Chennai and Madurai, they turned out in droves, with early voting rates nearing 38 percent by 11 am.
Marginalized communities, including daily wage earners and nomadic groups, traveled significant distances to cast their votes, underscoring the profound sense of civic duty that outweighed the discomfort of the oppressive heat.
Efforts were made to alleviate the heat's impact at polling stations, with provisions for shaded areas and water. Even election campaigns adapted, moving activities to cooler evening hours to avoid peak daytime temperatures.
