Cambodia and China Forge Deeper Ties with '2+2' Dialogue
Cambodia and China held their first '2+2' Strategic Dialogue, enhancing political and security cooperation. The meeting included high-ranking officials from both nations and aims to solidify their strategic partnership. China remains Cambodia's largest investor, amid scrutiny over the Ream Naval Base's military implications.
Cambodia and China convened their inaugural '2+2' Strategic Dialogue Mechanism meeting on Wednesday, marking a strengthening of political and security ties between the two nations. The dialogue involved the foreign and defense ministers from both countries, discussing strategies to bolster their mutual partnership.
This initiative, proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, reflects China's efforts to enhance its influence in Southeast Asia. China has previously employed a similar dialogue format with Indonesia. Following the discussions in Cambodia, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi will proceed to visit Thailand and Myanmar.
While infrastructure developments at Cambodia's Ream Naval Base have stirred suspicions of a possible Chinese military foothold, Cambodian officials have consistently refuted such claims. U.S. concerns persist, amplified by China's investment power and strategic maneuvers in the region.
