Election Commission sources stated on Tuesday that a complaint alleging Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address to the nation violated the election campaign code will be reviewed. The address allegedly breached rules of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) prior to elections in states like Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
Left parties recorded a formal complaint with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, arguing that Prime Minister Modi misused a public broadcaster for political purposes. This act, they asserted, violates election fairness and undermines democratic principles, especially with MCC guidelines in effect from March 15 to May 4.
A simultaneous plea from around 700 activists further pressed the Commission to take action. Opposition leaders MA Baby and P Sandosh Kumar underscored concerns over utilizing Doordarshan for political messaging, stressing the importance of maintaining a level electoral playing field.
