Pentagon Unveils Historic $1.5 Trillion Defense Budget Featuring 'Golden Fleet' and Drone Dominance
The Pentagon announced President Trump's $1.5 trillion defense budget for fiscal 2027, marking a major increase in military spending. Key highlights include the 'Golden Fleet' initiative in shipbuilding, increased drone warfare investment, and procurement of advanced aircraft. The budget notably omits funding for the Iran conflict, signaling more supplemental requests ahead.
The Pentagon has unveiled an unprecedented $1.5 trillion defense budget, marking the largest escalation in military spending since World War Two. The budget, devised under President Donald Trump's tenure, emphasizes emerging technologies and military capabilities, with a special focus on drone dominance, missile defense, and naval strength through the 'Golden Fleet' initiative.
Among the budget's highlights is a substantial increase in procurement for the Lockheed Martin F-35 jets and shipbuilding efforts. The budget dedicates over $65 billion to acquire 18 warships and 16 support vessels, championing the largest shipbuilding allocation since 1962. Additionally, a $53.6 billion investment is earmarked for drone warfare technologies and autonomous platforms.
In personnel development, notable increases in troop numbers and pay raises are proposed, particularly for junior enlisted members. However, the absence of funding for the ongoing conflict with Iran suggests additional appropriations will be required. The budget splits into a $1.15 trillion main request, alongside a $350 billion supplemental, contingent on a reconciliation bill similar to previous iterations.
