BJP Leads Nationwide Protests Over Defeated Women's Reservation Bill

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies have launched a nationwide protest against the opposition following the defeat of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill aimed at increasing women's participation in legislative bodies. The campaign highlights the government's commitment to gender equality, contrasting it with the opposition's alleged obstruction.

In a robust political maneuver, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has mobilized its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners for an extensive, nation-wide protest campaign. The initiative comes in the wake of the defeat of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha, where it failed to secure the necessary two-thirds majority.

Top sources within the party indicate that BJP state units have been tasked with organizing synchronized protests at district headquarters across the country. This movement endeavors to 'expose' the opposition's alleged role in derailing a pivotal bill aimed at enhancing gender equality in legislative bodies, thereby rallying public sentiment in support of the legislation.

The BJP Mahila Morcha is at the forefront, rallying women and building grassroots support through social media and street protests. Senior female leaders are vigorously engaging communities, especially in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, to spotlight the contrast between the government's commitment to women's empowerment and the opposition's resistance.

As the BJP positions the Women's Reservation Amendment Bill as an electoral cornerstone, the party underscores the bill's aim to ensure greater gender parity in India's democracy by 2029. The ongoing protests are a direct retort to Fridays' parliamentary drama where the government, despite securing a simple majority, fell short of the constitutional amendment requirement.

During the division of votes post-debate, Speaker Om Birla announced that 298 members supported the bill while 230 opposed it, failing to meet the two-thirds majority criteria. This has prompted the BJP to condemn the opposition's 'obstructive and regressive' stance on the crucial issue of gender equality.
