Tensions flared in Parliament as women MPs of the BJP staged a protest against the Congress and its allies following the defeat of a Constitution Amendment Bill aimed at enhancing women's representation in legislatures. The Bill, which sought to introduce reservations for women from 2029, failed to secure the necessary votes.
Union ministers, including Shobha Karandlaje and Raksha Khadse, criticized the opposition, accusing them of intentionally obstructing the Bill, which had been seen as crucial for women's political empowerment. The ministers alleged that the opposition's actions reflected an anti-women stance, despite the government's efforts to address concerns.
Despite the setback, BJP figures remain resolute. Actress-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut described the defeat as demoralizing but expressed faith in the government's intention to reintroduce the Bill. The proposal included increasing Lok Sabha seats and ensuring 33% reservation for women, aiming to pave the way for greater female participation in politics.
