The defeat of the Women's Reservation Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha has sparked a call for action from BJP National President Nitin Nabin, who vowed to take the issue to the streets. Nabin accused the Congress and its allies of betraying half of the nation's population, asserting that women will now mobilize against this perceived 'anti-women' alliance. He criticized the conduct of the opposition, particularly Rahul Gandhi, claiming that the event marked a tremendous setback for women's rights in India.
Nabin conveyed his dismay over the missed opportunity for women's empowerment, describing the day as one that could have been marked in 'golden letters' had the bill been passed. He emphasized the urgency of addressing the violation of women's rights through protests and public demonstrations, foretelling that women would question why their rights have been denied.
Conversely, Rahul Gandhi of the Congress depicted the outcome as a victory for the opposition, suggesting that they thwarted an attempt to undermine the Constitution under the guise of women's reservation. Gandhi maintained that the bill represented not an advancement for women but an attempt to alter India's political framework. The failure to secure the necessary two-thirds majority—298 members in favor and 230 against—led to the bill's downfall, as announced by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The opposition implored the government to implement women's reservation without delay, voicing their unwavering support.
