The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has raised alarms over the mounting debt in Madhya Pradesh under the BJP government, claiming it unduly benefits politicians and middlemen. The state has been borrowing approximately Rs 250 crore daily in the 2025-26 fiscal year, reaching a staggering total of Rs 91,500 crore.
According to Jaswinder Singh, the CPI (M) secretary, the state's outstanding debt has surpassed Rs 5.56 lakh crore, implying a per capita debt of Rs 6.17 lakh. In contrast, the per capita annual income stands at Rs 1.69 lakh, highlighting the financial strain on citizens.
Singh criticized the government's spending priorities, emphasizing issues like non-remunerative prices for farmers, low wages, and inadequate infrastructure. He warned that the debt's burden, including Rs 66,720 crore annual interest, ultimately falls on the populace, questioning the loans' public welfare impact.
