Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off the BJP's election campaign in Assam on Wednesday, expressing confidence in securing a 'hat-trick' for his party. During his campaign, Modi criticized the Congress, predicting it would suffer a 'century of defeats.' He also accused the Congress of previously attempting to introduce legislation to protect infiltrators and claimed that such plans would be thwarted by the BJP.
Modi visited the Manohari Tea Estate, engaging with tea workers and emphasizing the importance of tea to Assam's identity. He noted a shift in tea workers' political support towards the BJP, a change visible since the 2014 Parliamentary elections. Modi's campaign highlighted the BJP's infrastructural achievements and its commitments to Assam's development, criticizing Congress for its alleged historical neglect.
Addressing rallies, Modi alleged Congress promoted divisiveness and corruption. He declared that the BJP was reversing these trends by providing land rights to tea garden workers and enhancing infrastructure, citing BJP's construction of five bridges over the Brahmaputra River. Modi vowed to further Assam's progress by implementing policies like the Uniform Civil Code and increased women's economic status.
