In a significant move, the Lok Sabha approved the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2026, officially recognizing Amaravati as the state's capital. TDP MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu lauded this decision, asserting that justice is served as it reinstates Amaravati's status, overturning the previous plan of having three capitals.

The bill seeks to provide statutory recognition of Amaravati's capital status, in line with the TDP-led NDA government's vision. According to the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister's Office, this initiative will offer clarity and stability to the state's governance structure.

The original 2014 Act stipulated Hyderabad as the temporary joint capital for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, to be replaced by a new capital for Andhra Pradesh within ten years. On March 28, the Andhra Pradesh Assembly passed a resolution supporting Amaravati as its singular capital, setting the stage for this legislative development.

The unanimous resolution by the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly called on the Central government to formally recognize Amaravati as the permanent capital. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu affirmed his commitment to developing Amaravati into a world-class Blue-Green City, emphasizing its potential as a self-sustaining economic hub.
