BJP legislators staged a protest on Wednesday against a recent notification issued by the Himachal Pradesh government. The notification grants district commissioners the authority to make changes in the reservation roster for up to 5% of panchayats.
The protest took place at the Himachal Pradesh Assembly complex in Shimla, where slogans were raised against Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and the state government. Leader of the Opposition, Jairam Thakur, alleged that the notification is a tactic to delay the local body elections.
Thakur claimed that altering the reservation roster undermines the electoral process by delaying crucial elements of the election process. The Panchayati Raj and Urban bodies elections in the state are required to be held before May 31.
