Tensions Escalate: China's Firm Stance on Taiwan Reunification
China has reiterated its willingness to use force over Taiwan, despite recent media emphasizing peaceful reunification. The comments came ahead of key discussions between US and Chinese leaders. While China promotes autonomy models for Taiwan, Taipei rejects the notion, highlighting it as an attempt to undermine Taiwan's sovereignty.
China has made a striking statement, asserting its willingness to use force over Taiwan, a stance not commonly expressed in public but long upheld by Beijing. The assertion comes just before a high-level meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, Peng Qing'en, reaffirmed that peaceful reunification remains a priority. However, he made it clear that China will not forgo the option of using force if necessary. This tough rhetoric diverges from recent state media articles that promoted a more tranquil approach.
In Taipei, Taiwan's National Security Bureau Director-General, Tsai Ming-yen, countered China's proposal, arguing that Taiwan has no market for the autonomy model seen in Hong Kong and Macau. He accused the Chinese Communist Party of attempting to diminish Taiwan's sovereignty, a stance unequivocally rejected by Taiwan's government.
